American Reuben Sandwich

Grilled rye sandwich with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing — a classic deli staple.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 300g sliced corned beef (or pastrami)
  • 150g Swiss cheese, sliced
  • 1 cup sauerkraut, drained
  • For dressing: 3 tbsp mayo, 2 tbsp ketchup, 1 tsp horseradish, 1 tsp pickle relish
  • Butter for grilling

Instructions

  1. Mix the dressing ingredients.
  2. Butter one side of each bread slice.
  3. Spread the un-buttered side with dressing.
  4. Layer beef, sauerkraut and cheese on two slices; close.
  5. Cook butter-side down in a pan over medium until golden and cheese melts; flip and cook the other side.

  • Low heat lets the cheese melt before the bread burns.
