British Treacle Tart

A sweet golden syrup and breadcrumb tart with lemon — a beloved old-fashioned British pudding.

Ingredients

  • 1 shortcrust pastry case (blind-baked)
  • 450g golden syrup
  • 100g fine breadcrumbs
  • Zest of 2 lemons
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Warm the golden syrup gently.
  2. Stir in breadcrumbs, lemon zest, juice and salt.
  3. Pour into the blind-baked pastry case.
  4. Brush the pastry edges with beaten egg.
  5. Bake at 180C for 30-35 minutes until set and lightly browned.
  6. Cool 15 minutes — it sets as it cools.
